AS was started by Dr. Gloria Holmes and incorporated in 1992 in New York city. She wanted to work with and for the benefit of African people after visiting the continent to learn about the African origin of civilization and her cultural roots.  Although she had the education, drive and professional background to work in any of the international organizations, she was consistently denied employment by international organizations in the U.S., which were run by those of European descent.  The same reason was given, “They want their own people trained instead of sending over Americans.”  Her response was, “I understand the concept, however as an African-American it is particularly meaningful to me to work in the continent of my cultural roots just as many Jews from the U.S. are now going to Israel to work.”

Although many in those organizations understood this, she was not taken into any those organizations.  Yet, when she directly approached Africans, they wanted to work with her and other African-Americans. Her solution was to start her own organization where African-Americans could have a positive way to work, contribute and learn about a modern Africa and global involvement.  The firm Simpson, Thatcher & Bartlett represented and incorporated AS pro bono when they read Gloria's proposal for establishing the organization.
