MY BABY BROTHER HAS A MUSTACHE

Hardcover  $10.95

Baby Barley has a mustache, which has caused a great deal of turmoil in his family. Relatives on both sides of the family blame the other; and mom goes through all sorts of actions to hide Barley’s mustache. When mom and dad are at their wits-end with staring, peeping, and trying to hide Barley’s mustache, they take him to the Barber Shop. Baby Barley is subjected to adult-sized barber instruments that are too sharp, too noisy, and too scary before his parents realize it was not a good idea. The ever-calm Barley, however, takes it in stride. The young sibling analyzes her home situation and feels she should do something to solve the problem. She exhibits sensible behavior and thinking when the adults’ emotions keep them in chaos. She however, sees the situation without blame, embarrassment or denial, and uses her power to help solve the family problem. Once solved however, it turns out that baby Barley has power of his own.

This book for preschoolers presents a carefully teacher-planned Science Area activity from a child’s point of view. At the same time, it offers learning about scientific discovery and observation. The illustrations play with the deadness of the bugs, a major interest of children. The author (the same person) leads us through a child’s perspective on a classroom experience, which shows the gap between teacher intent and what a child actually gets out of it.

$11.95

This is a story for preschoolers and elementary-aged children.  A six-and-a-half year girl with twin eleven year old sisters has a prank played on her where they stuff her cloth doll’s middle to make her look pregnant. The little sister believes the doll is pregnant and wants to tell mom. The older two girls realize that this would mean getting in trouble, so they convince her to have them handle the doll’s pregnancy instead of mom. The little sister gets the attention of her siblings in various, extensive, and unexpected ways as they attend to the needy doll and keep it from their mother. Meanwhile, mom discovers the doll’s condition, realizing the mean trick. She decides to have the doll deliver a baby which means buying a new baby doll for the little sister. The twin’s mean trick would backfire, since everyone was told no new toys. However, little sister carefully calculates the situation and announces that the doll is pregnant with triplets.

The writer-illustrator enjoys presenting the amusing story that weaves the whimsical with the practical from a child’s sensible perspective, and using images that tell the same story from a slightly different view than the text. Dr. Gloria continues in the field of Early Childhood as a consultant reviewing preschool programs around the U.S. and as head of AFRICA Seed, Inc., partnering with schools in Africa.
